A variety of Japanese shield fern, prolifica is a lovely species of dryopteris.
New growth has a slightly pink variation, and the large fronds stand pretty much upright. This fern constantly has different colours as the season progresses, from green to copper and red coppery tones. An almost evergreen fern, in mild winters it will retain its leaves but will likely collapse in spring as new fronds appear. Cut these off and compost.
As with most ferns it prefers shade, but will tolerate sun if kept consistently moist. A medium to large fern, it needs space. It spreads easily so if you want a real show, leave space around it for the babies!
